TikTok, the wildly popular short-form video platform, has introduced a feature that allows users to download up to 2 hours of content for offline viewing. This development aims to enhance the user experience, especially for those with limited internet access or who want to conserve mobile data.

Just like downloading your favourite TV show or movie for a long-haul flight or road trip, you can download a bunch of TikToks to scroll through while offline – but you will need to plan ahead!

How it works:

  • Users can select videos they want to save for offline viewing
  • The app will download and store these videos locally on the device
  • Up to 2 hours of content can be saved at a time
  • Downloaded videos are available for 30 days before expiring

TikToker Pia Muehlenbeck shared the details on “How to watch TikTok when there’s no WiFi.” Here’s how to do it:

  1. Before entering a no-reception zone (e.g., a plane or a remote area), open your TikTok settings by tapping the three-line icon in the top right corner of your profile page.
  2. Navigate to the ‘Cache & Cellular’ section and select ‘offline videos.’
  3. Choose to download 50, 100, 150, or 200 videos.

Just remember to download the videos while you’re still on Wi-Fi, or else it will DRAIN your data.

Download sizes and viewing times:

  • 50 videos: About 30 minutes of viewing time, takes up 27MB
  • 200 videos: Around 2 hours of content, uses 150MB

However, as one user humorously noted: “200 videos lasting 2 hours? Clearly, they haven’t seen my scroll speed
