Reportedly, Taylor Swift’s music catalog has returned to TikTok after a hiatus beginning February 1, when it was removed due to a ban initiated by Universal Music Group (UMG). The disappearance of Swift’s music followed the expiration of the licensing agreement between UMG and TikTok on January 31. In an open letter directed at TikTok, UMG expressed discontent with the proposed payment rates for artists and songwriters, citing a significant shortfall compared to compensation from other major social platforms. UMG accused TikTok of endeavoring to establish a music-focused business model without adequately remunerating creators for their contributions.
Although there hasn’t been an official statement from either Swift’s camp or TikTok, fans have promptly observed the reappearance of tracks from The Taylor’s Version album re-releases on the app, now accessible for use. This timing coincides neatly with the imminent launch of Swift’s 11th album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” slated for April 19. Nevertheless, artists affiliated with Universal labels and its publishing arm, such as Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, and Justin Bieber, remain unable to feature their music on TikTok.
